Renger flies but doesn’t land in good start position

Renger van der Zande started strong at the Tango Masters of Formula 3 by driving the second-best time in the first part of the qualification. In the deciding qualification session, however, the Nijmegan native’s time fell to ninth in the rankings. The reason can be sought in the tyres, which behaved differently at higher temperatures, and an incident with Jules Bianchi, which cost the Frenchman the pole position.

Renger van der Zande: “After this morning things were looking very promising indeed. I had driven one of the fastest times ever at Zandvoort and was reasonably hopeful I could match that time in the qualification, but for one reason or another I wasn’t able to. I’ve just had a look at the data with my engineer, and it looks like we lacked a bit of speed at the top end. It also seems that the Kumho tyres behaved somewhat differently at the higher temperatures we had in the afternoon. We have to take a closer look at exactly what the problem is. This is really a disappointment. After this morning I had really expected better.” Concerning the incident with Bianchi, Renger said: “He was really blocking me, and I wasn’t the only one who had problems with him. When I went to submit a protest to the stewards there were four other drivers waiting to complain about Bianchi.”

The Tango Masters of Formula 3 starts at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
