Disciplinary measure for Renger van der Zande

It’s all in the game. The race in the Formula 3 Euroseries in Oschersleben literally went up in smoke for Renger van der Zande. After an excellent start, which saw him join the leading group, his fire extinguisher went off in the cockpit. It went all over his visor and filled the driver’s cockpit with foam. However, the driver from Nijmegen still managed to finish the race in seventeenth place and on the final lap, he recorded the fourth fastest time with a sticky and dirty visor.

His weekend then went from bad to worse. The stewards penalized the Mercedes driver and made him start the next day’s race from the back of the grid, because at the finish, his car was a kilo too light due to the empty fire extinguisher. This reason was accepted by the stewards, but they also concluded that Renger should not have continued racing with the foam in the cockpit.

“In view of the events of the last couple of weeks, people are starting to panic when it comes to safety,” said Renger. “In this instance, a fighting spirit and perseverance are being penalized. I am not the sort of person to just sit there and moan when this sort of thing happens. We will accept the ruling and do everything we can to be the fastest tomorrow. My motto is 'Fun is everything'.”

It is good to know that the team boss of Motopark Academy, Timo Rumpfkeil, has been very impressed with Renger’s contribution to the development of the car and the team. After his commitments to the British Formula 3 Championship, he has offered Renger the opportunity to finish the season with the team. Renger and his management team will announce their decision on Wednesday.
